Commercial Hubs with a Regional Reach

With 450,000 residents and as many consumers, Greater Nancy is the main commercial hub in the Meurthe-et-Moselle area. Its facilities and diverse offer are enjoyed across all of the southern Lorraine region (Meuse and Vosges).

A High-Impact, Attractive Downtown Area

The downtown area, leading commercial hub in Greater Nancy, enjoys clear vitality. The main shopping streets, served by the tramway, are home to nationally-renowned store brands, such as Zara, H&M, Fnac Junior, Mexx, Esprit, Séphora, Douglas and Darty, which is making its comeback in the downtown area. The Old Town, with its restaurants, cafés and antique shops remains a vibrant area that is much-loved by Nancy residents.

As the commercial epicentre of the city's core, Espace Saint Sébastien and its 110 stores attract over 10 million visitors per year. Just next to it, the indoor food market, open every day and currently under renovation, includes 63 shops. Lastly, the refurbishment of the train station area, with the arrival of the high-speed train in 2007 and the vitality of the Rives de Meurthe Quarter, currently under renovation, make Nancy’s downtown area even more attractive.

Nancy has been a fore-runner in vitalising its city centre, by providing local merchants with les Vitrines de Nancy. It has turned out to be a real trailblazer in doing so, as the idea has since been adopted by 80 major cities in France, and even by Brussels!
Les Vitrines de Nancy brings together merchants from the city centre around live events and festive occasions (Saint Nicolas'Day, Christmas Village, The Grande Braderie sales, etc.). They also offer them the opportunity to implement new services conceived of to improve the downtown area's attractiveness. The association, headed by Jean-Pierre Lehmann, also co-president of the national association, has membership of 250. It was founded in 1991 and is jointly financed by the local authorities and merchants.

In addition, the City Centre Committee is a place for exchange and debate over any number of projects regarding the heart of the metropolitan area. It periodically brings together the merchants from Les Vitrines de Nancy, representatives of consular chambers, the City of Nancy and the Urban Community of Greater Nancy.

Dynamic and Diverse Commercial Hubs in the Outskirts

Commercial areas are continuing to develop at the edges of the metropolitan area. They still offer opportunities for new companies to establish themselves there, whether in existing buildings or other available land.

In addition to the city centre, recent developments are occurring in three main areas :

- in the South, the Frocourt Zone adds to the existing shopping opportunities near Cora and Decathlon, two major stores, on the home equipment segment (Alinéa, Darty, Leroy Merlin and others)

- to the North, the Saule Gaillard Zone is developing around a Leclerc Hypermarket, with names such as King Jouets, Planète Saturn and others

- to the east, the Green Door still has available land and buildings.

Alongside that, convenience stores in the village centres or neighbouring areas still offer attractive opportunities for setting up business, like the Nations Shopping Centre in the town of Vandœuvre-lès-Nancy or La Cascade in Laxou.

The Department-Wide Commercial Facilities Observatory, in partnership with the trade authorities and local governments, adopted the Department-Wide Commercial Facilities Plan for Meurthe-et-Moselle in May 2004, with applies to the whole of the metropolitan area. It is available from the Meurthe-et-Moselle Prefecture.
